Then Jesus' Mother and Brothers

JANUARY 23, 2024 - TUESDAY
Tuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time (Green)
Lectionary: 318
CYCLE B - YEAR II

Reading 1
2 Sm 6:12b-15, 17-19

David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom
into the City of David amid festivities.
As soon as the bearers of the ark of the LORD had advanced six steps,
he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.
Then David, girt with a linen apron,
came dancing before the LORD with abandon,
as he and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD
with shouts of joy and to the sound of the horn.
The ark of the LORD was brought in and set in its place
within the tent David had pitched for it.
Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
When he finished making these offerings,
he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.
He then distributed among all the people,
to each man and each woman in the entire multitude of Israel,
a loaf of bread, a cut of roast meat, and a raisin cake.
With this, all the people left for their homes.

Responsorial Psalm
PS 24:7, 8, 9, 10

R. (8) Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Lift up, O gates, your lintels;
reach up, you ancient portals,
that the king of glory may come in!

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Who is this king of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle.

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Lift up, O gates, your lintels;
reach up, you ancient portals,
that the king of glory may come in!

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Who is this king of glory?
The LORD of hosts; he is the king of glory.

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Alleluia
SEE MT 11:25

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.

Gospel
Mk 3:31-35

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
"Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you."
But he said to them in reply,
"Who are my mother and my brothers?"
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
"Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother."

REFLECTION:

Is Jesus rejecting his own mother and family? Not at all, but he is reminding his disciples that there is a kinship that takes priority over blood relations. It is centered on a radical call to be like him. Relationship with him brings intimacy, like that of a mother, brother, or sister.

The essence of being a Christian is to widen our relationships – of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection – all the qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity.

Jesus invites me to call God my father and he recognizes me as one of his family. What more assurance do I need that Jesus walks with me?

PRAYER:

Loving God, thank you for the gift of my parents and their unsparing, self-giving love. Thank you for the holy mother of Jesus, who is my mother too. The old Irish saying is always fresh in my heart: ‘We are related to God on his mother’s side.’

CYCLE B - YEAR II

Reading I
2 Sm 5:1-7, 10

All the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said:
“Here we are, your bone and your flesh.
In days past, when Saul was our king,
it was you who led the children of Israel out and brought them back.
And the LORD said to you, ‘You shall shepherd my people Israel
and shall be commander of Israel.’”
When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron,
King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD,
and they anointed him king of Israel.
David was thirty years old when he became king,
and he reigned for forty years:
seven years and six months in Hebron over Judah,
and thirty-three years in Jerusalem
over all Israel and Judah.
Then the king and his men set out for Jerusalem
against the Jebusites who inhabited the region.
David was told, “You cannot enter here:
the blind and the lame will drive you away!”
which was their way of saying, “David cannot enter here.”
But David did take the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David.
David grew steadily more powerful,
for the LORD of hosts was with him.

Responsorial Psalm
89:20, 21-22, 25-26

R.        (25a)  My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him.

Once you spoke in a vision,
and to your faithful ones you said:
“On a champion I have placed a crown;
over the people I have set a youth.”

R.        My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him.

“I have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have anointed him,
That my hand may be always with him,
and that my arm may make him strong.”

R.        My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him.

“My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him,
and through my name shall his horn be exalted.
I will set his hand upon the sea,
his right hand upon the rivers.”

R.        My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him.

See 2 Tm 1:10

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death
and brought life to light through the Gospel.

Gospel
Mk 3:22-30

The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus,
“He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and
“By the prince of demons he drives out demons.”
Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables,
“How can Satan drive out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
And if a house is divided against itself,
that house will not be able to stand.
And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided,
he cannot stand;
that is the end of him.
But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property
unless he first ties up the strong man.
Then he can plunder his house.
Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies
that people utter will be forgiven them.
But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will never have forgiveness,
but is guilty of an everlasting sin.”
For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

REFLECTION:

Talk to Jesus about how you admire his wisdom and courage, contemplate this as it unfolds in the story, and share with him how you feel about him being like this.
Let Jesus express his admiration of how you try to be true to yourself, to your convictions about what for you is true and worthwhile. Tell him how you feel about what he says to you.

PRAYER:

I live and die in the arms of a loving, all-forgiving Father. An immense love always awaits me. It is towards love that I walk as life proceeds. Even when I fall, I fall into love. Yes, Father, I come to you like a child, to throw myself into your love, your love which awaits me.

Let The Children Come To Me, Do Not Prevent Them (FEAST OF THE SANTO NIÑO - B)

JANUARY 21, 2024 - SUNDAY
FEAST OF THE SANTO NIÑO (White)
(Proper Feast in the Philippines)
Holy Childhood Day
CYCLE B - YEAR II

Reading 1
Is 9:1-6

Saw a big light
the city has long been in darkness,
the light has shone
to the people living in a land shrouded in darkness.
You encouraged their celebration,
you increased their delight.
Like people at harvest time,
such as people dividing confiscated wealth.
You have conquered the nation that enslaved your people
such as defeating the army of Midian.
You broke the whip of their tormentors.
For the shoe of warriors,
all clothing stained with blood will be burned.
Because a baby boy was born for us.
A child was given to us
And he will rule over us.
He is the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God,
eternal Father, the Prince of Peace.
Extensive power and eternal peace
will be granted to the throne of David and his reign
to stabilize it and maintain it
in justice and righteousness
now and forever.
The Almighty Lord will do it.

Responsorial Psalm
97:1. 2-3. 3-4. 5-6

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Sing a new song and dedicate it to the Lord,
because what he did was truly amazing!
In his own strength and inherent holiness,
effortlessly attained that desired success.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

He also revealed this success,
salvation has been made known to the nations.
The promise to Israel he fully fulfills.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

He is loyal to them and love is pure.
The victory of our God is everywhere!
Shout for joy, all the earth;
the Lord is glad to be praised in singing!

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

To the accompaniment of lyres let that music be heard,
and praise the Lord with melodious music.
Also play the trumpet with the horn,
shout before the Lord our king.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Reading 2
Eph 1:3-6.15-18

Brothers and Sisters:
Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He has given us all spiritual blessings because of our union with Christ. And in this union with us, he chose us before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Because of God’s love, he ordained us to be his children through Jesus Christ. That is his purpose and will. Let us praise him for his wonderful care for us through his beloved Son!

So, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the elect, I have been constantly thanking God for you. I remember you in my prayers, and ask the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Father, to give you the spirit of wisdom and the true knowledge of him. May God enlighten your minds so that you know what we expect when he calls us. This is the glory he has reserved for his elect.

Alleluia
John 1, 14. 12

R. Alleluia, Alleluia

The Word became man,
so that all may believe
will he make great.

R. Alleluia, Alleluia

Gospel
Mk 10:13-16

People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
“Let the children come to me; do not prevent them,
for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it.”
Then he embraced the children and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.

REFLECTION:

The Gospel urges us to love. This scene shows how Jesus understood that with children. A crowd of them interrupted his preaching, and the apostles were shooing them away. They were noisy, energetic, enjoying life, running instinctively towards someone who also enjoyed it. The apostles spoke sternly to those who brought them: These kids are not serious. We are here to listen to the Sermon on the Mount and we can't hear him properly with all this noise and commotion. Jesus intervened, invited the children closer and laid his hands on them. He gave them two precious things that cost no money: time and affection.

Our treatment of children and of the vulnerable, of outcasts and those with disabilities can fall far short of what Jesus demands. The courage to reflect gently on past failings can give us wisdom and freedom to do better in the future.

Do I take the time to nourish and connect with my childlike qualities? This will help me retain a sense of wonder, awe, gratitude and excitement in the small things of creation.

PRAYER:

Almighty and ever living God, Señor Sto. Niño we thank You for everything that You've been done for us. Your extraordinary love, comfort and care is totally genuine. Always open our hearts to love and care our families and loved ones in all aspects in life.
