Reading 1
Is 9:1-6

Saw a big light

the city has long been in darkness,

the light has shone

to the people living in a land shrouded in darkness.

You encouraged their celebration,

you increased their delight.

Like people at harvest time,

such as people dividing confiscated wealth.

You have conquered the nation that enslaved your people

such as defeating the army of Midian.

You broke the whip of their tormentors.

For the shoe of warriors,

all clothing stained with blood will be burned.

Because a baby boy was born for us.

A child was given to us

And he will rule over us.

He is the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God,

eternal Father, the Prince of Peace.

Extensive power and eternal peace

will be granted to the throne of David and his reign

to stabilize it and maintain it

in justice and righteousness

now and forever.

The Almighty Lord will do it.

Responsorial Psalm
97:1. 2-3. 3-4. 5-6

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Sing a new song and dedicate it to the Lord,

because what he did was truly amazing!

In his own strength and inherent holiness,

effortlessly attained that desired success.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

He also revealed this success,

salvation has been made known to the nations.

The promise to Israel he fully fulfills.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

He is loyal to them and love is pure.

The victory of our God is everywhere!

Shout for joy, all the earth;

the Lord is glad to be praised in singing!

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

To the accompaniment of lyres let that music be heard,

and praise the Lord with melodious music.

Also play the trumpet with the horn,

shout before the Lord our king.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Reading 2
Eph 1:3-6.15-18

Brothers and Sisters:

Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He has given us all spiritual blessings because of our union with Christ. And in this union with us, he chose us before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Because of God’s love, he ordained us to be his children through Jesus Christ. That is his purpose and will. Let us praise him for his wonderful care for us through his beloved Son!

So, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the elect, I have been constantly thanking God for you. I remember you in my prayers, and ask the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Father, to give you the spirit of wisdom and the true knowledge of him. May God enlighten your minds so that you know what we expect when he calls us. This is the glory he has reserved for his elect.

Alleluia
John 1, 14. 12

R. Alleluia, Alleluia

The Word became man,

so that all may believe

will he make great.

R. Alleluia, Alleluia

Gospel
Lk 2:41-52

Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast

of Passover,

and when he was twelve years old,

they went up according to festival custom.

After they had completed its days, as they were returning,

the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,

but his parents did not know it.

Thinking that he was in the caravan,

they journeyed for a day

and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,

but not finding him,

they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.

After three days they found him in the temple,

sitting in the midst of the teachers,

listening to them and asking them questions,

and all who heard him were astounded

at his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him,

they were astonished,

and his mother said to him,

“Son, why have you done this to us?

Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”

And he said to them,

“Why were you looking for me?

Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

But they did not understand what he said to them.

He went down with them and came to Nazareth,

and was obedient to them;

and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor

before God and man.

GOSPEL REFLECTION:

Like every other mother, Mary was the person who had the greatest influence on her son's heart. She taught him how to love, share, pray, be compassionate. She was the first to speak to him about God, and in her he could see these values come alive. Mary, shape and teach my heart to be as close to the heart of Jesus as your own heart was.

PRAYER:

O Holy Child Jesus, today I remember all the missing children of our world through slavery, bonded labor and trafficking. I pray for their distraught parents who frantically seek for the child entrusted to them.
